Cisco Networking Academy

The world is changing!!! Technology is revolutionizing almost every aspect of our lives. The only thing holding us back is knowledge. Companies all over the world need a talented work force with the skills to drive their businesses into the 21st century Internet economy. The 17 Cisco Networking Academies of Miami Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) can provide students with these skills to prepare them for higher education and a gateway to rewarding careers.

Our first networking competition took place this year at Miami Lakes Educational Center on April 25th, 2008. Students from several high schools competed to bridge the borderless digital world in South Florida. The following events took place:

Event 1 – Structured Cabling
The purpose of the hands-on component of the contest will be to test the students' ability to make a straight through, cross over, and roll over cable meeting all the industry specifications in the allotted time limit.

Event 2 – Network Design
The purpose is to design an appropriate addressing scheme and assign addresses and subnet mask pairs to device interfaces and hosts.

Event 3 – Network Configuration
The purpose is to configure the networking devices to route using OSPF, static and default routes, Inter-VLAN routing and VLAN Trunking.

Event 4 – Network troubleshooting
The purpose is to troubleshoot the infrastructure, document a detailed solution that would repair the routing and switching issues in the network.

Strong technical skills are only half of the equation when pursuing a career in IT. Work experience and workforce readiness are the other key components in the career development of students enrolled in the Cisco Networking Academy Program. An important step in getting real work experience and building job readiness is participating in internship or work placement activities.

The Infrastructure & System Support (ISS) department of M-DCPS established internship opportunities for students enrolled in M-DCPS Cisco Academy Programs. The 2007 Cisco Academy Apprentice Program (C.A.A.P) summer internship is designed to give students real-life experiences in the world of work. During this time, students will take on the roles and responsibilities of valued members of our organization.
