The Accelerated Reader program is a motivational and instructional program that utilizes books and technology to promote recreational reading while assessing comprehension. Students select a book within their current reading level range, read it, then take a computerized comprehension quiz that includes five to twenty randomly selected, multiple choice questions.

Accelerated Reader assesses reading comprehension, tracks performance, and provides reports for teachers, students, and parents. As students progress in the program, they are encouraged to read more challenging and a greater number of books.

Currently, Accelerated Reader supports thousands of books in English and Spanish, including many low-level, high-interest titles that draw students into reading. The Accelerated Reader program provides information on ways of intervening with at-risk students and setting reading goals for the school.

Please contact your school library media specialists for more information on how Accelerated Reader works and how it can help you motivate students to become better readers.
