Lego Education is being promoted in MDCPS, grades K-12, to stimulate critical thinking skills in STEM for children of all ages. To complement Lego Education, the FIRST organization is also being promoted for MDCPS K-12 students, to encourage student participation in competitive challenges through the Junior FIRST Lego League (K-3), FIRST Lego League (4- 8), and FIRST Tech Challenge (7-12).
Through FIRST competitions, students learn “gracious professionalism,” a term coined by MIT professor Dr. Woodie Flowers, to encourage high-quality work, while emphasizing respect and kindness for others, with integrity and sensitivity. “Coopertition” is another term coined at FIRST, and it means to display unqualified kindness and respect in the face of fierce competition. It is with these goals that MDCPS has curated information about FIRST competitions with the links below.
